Colston Consultants offers a series of training modules for governors and legislatures, faculty, administrators and Boards of trustees that will offer systems that transform each culture to better respond to the next epoch of higher education.
We offer services that will assist businesses and government agencies to transform their Leaders and staffs so they meet the demands of evolving systems in this new millennium. Change comes from the individual who must consciously take the initiative to advance as a human being. The transformed individual becomes a part of the evolved team which transforms the culture of the university, government agency or business.
President Barack Obama has said, “We are using 19th century models in the 21st Century. When it comes to leadership/administration in colleges and universities, agencies and government the old Bureaucratic/ Captain Ahab” leadership-administrative model is still in force. Cultures have not integrated new concepts of team. Leaders do not understand the discipline they must employ in the process. Faculties and staff do not understand that the democratic process requires tremendous discipline under Governance with its influence on policies and procedures. While universities are inherently set up based on a consultative system (committees) the concept is implemented in an inconsistent manner.
Colleges and universities, agencies and government have to respect ethics, policies, procedures and the rule of law. This is especially true for entities who employ an elitist concept of JUSTICE which is considered a privilege and not a right. The dispersal of justice is at many HBCUs (historically black universities and colleges) is unconsciously based on affiliation with church, friends and pan- Hellenic cultures.
Colleges and universities must be careful about corporatizing their institutions because their cultures are inherently humanistic and consultative.
Boards of trustees must transform their administrative systems to create a supportive environment for the transformation of institutional cultures to incorporate the 21st Century model. When my University conducted a search for a new president the executive representing the search firm said, “A university will find it difficult to rise above its board of trustees.”
All institutions but especially colleges and universities are impacted by change driven by their faculty, students and state government agencies. This change is not unlike the transformation of governments to democracy witnessed around the world. World dynamics demand change.
